Not polished. Alive.

An organic artist retreat on the river: a log cabin that grew out of a fishing shack, ten wooded acres, a stage in the pines, and a man who built it all from salvage because, why not.

The place

Perfectlyimperfect.

In 1999 Allen Walker, a carpenter like his father, bought a one-room fishing shack on the Cape Fear River. He has been building outward ever since, with reclaimed materials, very few walls, and art on every surface.

Windows from the old Lumina Pavilion at Wrightsville Beach. Bottles set in the walls like stained glass. A dried Century-plant stalk rising three stories. Old Mercedes with plants growing out of them, a bus, two Airstreams, a carport roofed with an upside-down boat. Guests who find it “a little much” at first tend to leave hugging people.

  • 10wooded acres on the Northeast Cape Fear
  • 1999the year it began as a fishing shack
  • ~3,000sq ft of artist-built log cabin
  • 60 ftrowing scull hung along the main ridge
  • 1907Knabe 9′ concert grand, self-playing
  • 10 minfrom Wilmington’s historic district

I never expect to be finished.

Walk through it.

The main room

Thirty-five feet of air. A 60-foot rowing scull hangs upside down along the ridge and pokes out the front of the house like a horn. Every wall is a gallery.

Beams and the spiral stair

Almost everything but the plumbing and wiring is reclaimed. Heated floors, and glass on every side for the light through the oaks.

The loft

A brass bed under stained glass, beneath a curved ceiling. One of four bedrooms and eight beds.

The reading corner

A floating stair, a globe lamp, a desk by the window. Few walls, because walls get in the way of what people want to do.

Up the stairs

Sleeps up to 16, with 3.5 baths, a 1907 concert grand downstairs and the river out the door.
